Market segment

Biomethane in shipping.

Under FuelEU Maritime, shipping companies must progressively reduce the GHG intensity of the energy used on board. Bio-LNG and e-LNG are an option that LNG-fuelled ships can use right away — provided the chain of custody holds through to bunkering.

Context

The shipping company needs GHG intensity, not molecules.

FuelEU Maritime has applied since 2025 to ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above calling at EU ports. The regulation limits the GHG intensity of the energy used on board and tightens the limit in stages up to 2050. Maritime transport is also covered by the EU Emissions Trading System.

What counts is the GHG value across the whole chain: injection, transport, liquefaction and bunkering. Every step must be reflected in the mass balance and backed by sustainability certificates so that the volume is recognised in the shipping company’s reporting.

We run this chain for producers, traders and bunker suppliers, from liquefaction to the certificate for the shipping company.
