Market segment

Biomethane in the power market.

Power generation from biomethane in a CHP unit remains the economic anchor for many existing plants — with its own evidence duties and a tight regulatory corset.

Context

Power generation is not obsolete, but it is an arithmetic exercise.

Anyone using biomethane in a CHP unit and claiming remuneration under the German Renewable Energy Act must evidence the renewable origin of the gas. In practice this runs through the German Biogas Register, complemented by the requirements of the biomass power sustainability ordinance.

For existing plants the question is usually not whether to generate power, but whether power generation still beats marketing the gas as transport fuel. That calculation shifts with every change in quota prices, auction results and allowance prices.

We run the alternatives for your specific portfolio and operate the route you choose — including the certificates that keep power generation eligible.

What matters

The operational points.

  1. 01

    Proof of origin for remuneration

Entry and cancellation in the biogas register, aligned to the grid operator’s settlement periods.

  2. 02

    Sustainability requirements

Compliance with and documentation of the biomass power sustainability ordinance.

  3. 03

    No double claiming

Volumes claimed under the EEG are no longer available for the GHG quota or emissions trading.

  4. 04

    Economic comparison

EEG power generation versus fuel marketing, based on your volumes and contracts.
